Stereotyping
I chose Cinnamon Toast Crunch’s series of TV spots featuring “Amy,” a “vlogger” who is a self-proclaimed Cinnamon Toast Crunch fanatic. Her character is a stereotype of all the mommy bloggers out there -- bubbly, quirky, and really annoying. It gives the impression that all bloggers live in their own little world, where they (and their product/idea/hobby) are the only thing that matters. The premise is faulty (they wanted to jump on the product personality bandwagon), and it doesn’t work. A crazy vlogger has nothing, really, to do with the product. It only offends those bloggers (who do take themselves too seriously), while trying to get the rest of the population to poke fun at them. It’s no fun for anybody.
Perhaps, in an effort to lighten the tone so no one can mistake its intent, they could have used children to post blogs about Cinnamon Toast Crunch instead of their Amy character. That way, it could be cute/funny instead of patronizing/psycho.
